Illyus Barrientos steps up for episode 964 of the Data Transmission Podcast, arriving alongside the release of his new single ‘Right Here’ with Brazilian artist MALU, out now on Toolroom.
The track marks MALU’s debut on the label. She comes with a strong live pedigree, having played Tomorrowland and Green Valley among other major events. ‘Right Here’ follows a run of recent Illyus releases that includes ‘Never Let You Go’ with MK, ‘People’s PRTY’ and ‘Deep Down’, the latter dropping on Toolroom in January. The new cut is built around big drums, a heavy bassline and a centred vocal.
Illyus carries a catalogue spread across Toolroom, Defected, Glasgow Underground, Love & Other and Nervous Records, with support logged from Carl Cox, Chris Lake, Hot Since 82, FISHER, Sam Divine, Mark Knight and Armand Van Helden. His remix credits include official reworks for Armand Van Helden, Duke Dumont, Dom Dolla, Purple Disco Machine, Calvin Harris and Sonny Fodera. On the DJ side, he has played Fabric, The Warehouse Project, Printworks, Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa, CRSSD and Splash House, and has delivered a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. He also holds hosting duties on Toolroom Radio and an A&R role at Electronic Nature.
The DT964 mix runs fourteen tracks and leans into club-focused house throughout. Illyus features heavily across the tracklist with exclusives including ‘Thinking Of You’, ‘Be Hot’, a rework of ‘I’m Gonna Get You’ with Angie Brown and ‘Cappuccino’ with James Hurr. Elsewhere, the mix draws on DJ Romain, Danny Howard, Prunk, Airwolf Paradise, William Kiss and DJ Gant-Man.
Looking ahead, Illyus has confirmed an upcoming release called ‘Thinking Of You’ on The Cross, which he describes as combining old school breaks and feel-good piano before shifting into a rave moment. He also has a hip house track landing on Danny Howard’s Nothing Else Matters imprint. On the live front, he is booked for a new XOYO date, a return to Ushuaïa alongside Calvin Harris and a debut appearance at Cova Santa.
