Chase & Status have made a surprise appearance in 007: First Light, the new James Bond video game developed by IO Interactive, performing a virtual DJ set inside one of the game’s nightclub missions.
In-game footage shows the UK drum and bass duo positioned in an elevated DJ booth, mixing tracks overhead while Bond’s polygonal protagonist weaves through a packed dancefloor below. The mission, titled “A Night Out,” tasks the player with spying on a clandestine meeting taking place somewhere inside the venue — making the Chase & Status set the perfect cover for Bond’s surveillance work.
For fans of the duo, though, the mission offers something beyond the usual spy intrigue. Two unreleased Chase & Status tracks serve as the soundtrack to the scene, giving diehard listeners an exclusive first listen buried inside a video game. It’s an unusual distribution method for new music, but one that rewards players who pay attention to what’s coming out of the speakers rather than just the action on screen.
IO Interactive leaned into the cultural weight of the cameo in a statement from a spokesperson: “It’s a modern pop-culture touchstone that keeps Bond in step with the world around him. Their inclusion adds a distinct edge to 007: First Light, not just as a cameo, but bringing immersive energy that amplifies Bond’s journey.”
Chase & Status are not the only music industry names woven into the fabric of the game. Belgian DJ and producer Dimitri Vegas features as a non-playable character and is credited on a remix of the Bond theme, while rock icon Lenny Kravitz lends his voice to Bawma, the game’s lead antagonist. The casting choices paint a picture of a production that was deliberately courting a broad cultural audience, pulling from electronic music, rock, and mainstream pop simultaneously.
The Chase & Status appearance arrives during a moment when DJs and electronic music figures seem to be pushing into unexpected corners of mainstream entertainment. Earlier this week, FISHER was announced as the voice of a garden gnome in the Australia and New Zealand release of Toy Story 5 — a piece of casting that raised more than a few eyebrows across the dance music world. Whether this represents a genuine shift in how brands and studios are thinking about electronic music talent, or simply a run of coincidental bookings, the frequency is hard to ignore.
