BOSS EX-4 Adds 120 Effects to Pedalboards

BOSS has announced the EX-4 Effects Expander, a compact multi-effects unit built to sit alongside an existing pedalboard rather than replace it. Arriving in October 2026 at $299.99 (£289), the EX-4 packs 120 effects into a dual-footswitch chassis that measures just 117mm wide — noticeably chunkier than a standard BOSS Compact Series pedal at 73mm, but still a relatively economical use of board real estate.

The core pitch from BOSS is straightforward: keep what already works, and add what’s missing. The EX-4 is not asking anyone to tear down a carefully assembled pedalboard. Instead, it slots in as a digital effects library that handles reverb, delay, modulation, compression, overdrive, distortion, and bass-specific processing, while leaving room for preferred analog drives, fuzz units, and specialty stompboxes to stay exactly where they are.

Up to four effect blocks can run simultaneously, and those blocks can be duplicates — two delays, two modulation processors, or a stack of drives if that’s the direction a player wants to go. The library pulls from familiar BOSS territory, covering the kind of effects associated with the brand’s yellow, orange, and black stompboxes, alongside more niche options like the Slicer and the SG-1 Slow Gear. Utility blocks are also part of the package, including foot volume, dual noise suppression, send and return routing, and divider and mixer configurations, all of which can be placed at any point in the signal chain. A global EQ rounds out the utility side.

Storage comes in the form of 128 factory memories and 128 user memories, totalling 256 presets. BOSS’s Gear Suite feature speeds up the editing process by offering preconfigured settings for each effect type — professionally adjusted starting points that players can then tweak and save into their own memory slots. The 2.4-inch colour display shows the full effect chain, individual blocks, editing pages, and system menus, with the four dedicated FX buttons colour-coded to match what’s shown on screen. Holding any of those buttons opens its editing parameters directly, cutting down on menu-diving during setup.

The two footswitches can be assigned globally or customised per memory, covering effect switching, memory navigation, master bypass, and tap tempo. Each footswitch is ringed by semi-circle LEDs that indicate the active function. BOSS also promises seamless memory changes, with delay repeats and reverb tails carrying over between presets rather than cutting off abruptly — a detail that matters considerably in live settings.

Connectivity is where the EX-4 makes its strongest case for integration. Four audio jacks support mono and stereo configurations, and two of those jacks can operate as an effects loop, allowing external pedals to be inserted at a chosen point within the EX-4’s own signal chain. That means an analog overdrive or a boutique fuzz can sit precisely where it needs to be relative to the digital effects surrounding it. MIDI connectivity is also included, along with an input for an external footswitch or expression pedal, giving players additional control options without requiring extra hardware on the board itself.

BOSS has applied large effects libraries to units like the GX-10 and ME-90B before, but the EX-4 is specifically shaped around the idea of supplementing rather than centralising. For players who have spent time building a pedalboard around a handful of trusted units but want access to a broader range of time-based and modulation effects without sacrificing those anchors, the EX-4 presents a reasonably targeted solution. The build follows the roadworthy aesthetic of units like the GT-100, and at under $300, it positions itself as a practical addition for anyone running a hybrid analog-digital setup.
