Becheranō brings dark, experimental indie vibes to Grapes debut with ‘Guess What’ EP

Mexican producer Becheranō makes his debut on Grapes with Guess What, a four-track EP that arrives as the imprint’s eleventh release and one of its most anticipated yet. Built around a title track co-created with Shmina, the record also gathers ‚No Exit‘ and ‚Waiting For‘ into what the label describes as a single unfolding storyline drawn from Becheranō’s world — a narrative arc that feels deliberate and considered rather than incidental.

Becheranō has been building serious momentum within the Mexican scene, and Guess What arrives heavily tested and long in the making. His sound sits at the intersection of dark indie dance and melodic house, layered with warm experimental synths, trippy sensual vocals, and deep, driving basslines. It’s a combination that feels both playful and hypnotic from the opening bars — the kind of music that pulls you in before you’ve had a chance to decide whether you’re listening or dancing.

The title track, featuring Shmina, leads the EP and functions as the clearest statement of what Becheranō does best. There’s a sensuality to the production that runs underneath the rhythmic drive, the experimental synth work giving the track an offbeat, slightly disorienting quality that keeps it from settling into anything too comfortable. It’s dark without being cold, melodic without being obvious — a balance that takes real craft to pull off.

Alongside the original material, Grapes founder and label boss Ben Biron steps in to remix the title track, closing the circle on the release in the process. Known for his tongue-in-cheek approach and a sharp instinct for what works on a dancefloor, Biron reshapes ‚Guess What‘ in his own image without discarding what made the original compelling. He pushes the groove forward and leans into the hooky, late-night energy of the track, turning it into something built explicitly for peak-time moments while keeping the offbeat charm of Becheranō’s vision intact. It’s the kind of remix that adds a dimension rather than simply repainting the walls.

Grapes itself is a label with a clear sense of purpose. Founded on the premise of telling stories from the streets through music and visual art, the imprint has used Guess What to extend that vision into unexpected territory — specifically, the world of a classic ’90s TV game show. The concept is playful, comedic, and nostalgic, which sits in interesting tension with the darker, more experimental qualities of Becheranō’s production. That contrast, however, is very much the point. Grapes has consistently positioned itself as a label where storytelling and sound are equally weighted, and this release reinforces that identity without needing to shout about it.

For Becheranō, the Grapes debut represents a significant moment. As one of the most talked-about names currently emerging from Mexico’s electronic music scene, landing on a label with this kind of curatorial focus — and having the label boss remix your title track — signals a level of confidence from both sides. The EP doesn’t feel like an introduction so much as a statement of arrival, the work of someone who has already figured out what they want to say and is now finding the right rooms to say it in.

With eleven releases deep, Grapes continues to operate with a consistency of vision that sets it apart. Guess What is available now, with the full premiere of Ben Biron’s remix streaming exclusively via When We Dip.
