Detroit producer Jon Dixon has delivered a remix of ‚Charlene‘, a track lifted from DFRA’s forthcoming A Quiet Storm EP, released through Berlin-based label Ascension on Wax. The remix is premiering exclusively via When We Dip.
DFRA is the project of Diego Ruiz, a Colombian-born producer based in Buenos Aires whose background includes formal studies in composition alongside a deep engagement with hip-hop, gospel, soul and disco. The A Quiet Storm EP moves between jazz-rooted musicality and the raw energy of Detroit and Chicago house. The original ‚Charlene‘ centres on soulful vocals set against chord progressions that draw comparisons to the early Motor City Drum Ensemble era, balancing nostalgia with a forward-looking sensibility.
For his remix, Jon Dixon rebuilds the track through a distinctly Detroit framework. A longstanding figure in the city’s scene and a key presence within the Underground Resistance orbit, Dixon strips the original back and reintroduces it with deeper textures and his signature keyboard work. The result moves away from immediacy, settling into a slow-burning, meditative groove that connects jazz improvisation with machine-driven rhythm.
Ascension on Wax was founded in Berlin and has established itself around the jazz lineage running through house music. The label pairs contemporary producers with a strong visual identity and limited vinyl pressings, drawing on the traditions of the 1990s US scene. The A Quiet Storm EP is set for release on 12-inch vinyl and digital formats.
